"Sunday Morning" on November 4, 2012

In the cover story, Martha Teichner talks to Nate Silver of The New York Times about "Crunching by the Numbers" on the topic of polling. The piece began with the old story of the Univac prediction of an Eisenhower victory in 1952, which was withheld by Walter Cronkite: But Univac did have something to say. With not even 3 1/2 million votes counted, "he" predicted 100 to 1 odds of an Eisenhower victory, in a landslide so huge it seemed impossible, given what was then thought to be a close race. The results were withheld for several hours, fearing humiliation. But Univac was right. At an earlier time, LBE/IPBiz had confirmed the truth of this story directly with a representative of the then-alive Cronkite.
